Job Summary

The Accountant Tax I provides foundational tax accounting and compliance support across multiple operational tax types, contributing to the accuracy, timeliness, and integrity of the organization’s tax reporting and related financial records. This role supports multi-state tax filings and associated accounting activities, helping ensure compliance with applicable regulations while supporting month-end close and audit readiness.

Working within established tax processes and under the guidance of senior team members, the Accountant Tax I prepares and validates data, performs reconciliations, and develops supporting workpapers across areas including Sales & Use Tax, Property Tax, Unclaimed Property, Business Licenses, Fleet Tax, Mandatory Deposits, and related filings. The role also assists with tax journal entries, account reconciliations, and variance analysis to support reliable tax balances and reporting.

This position collaborates with internal stakeholders to gather information, resolve discrepancies, and maintain accurate tax records, escalating questions or issues as appropriate. Through consistent execution and attention to detail, the Accountant Tax I supports internal and external audit activities and contributes to the overall effectiveness of the tax function.

Success in this role is demonstrated through the accurate and timely completion of assigned filings, reconciliations, and documentation, as well as the continued development of technical tax knowledge, process understanding, and professional judgment.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist in the preparation of multi-state operational tax returns and related filings across assigned tax types.
  • Gather, validate, and organize financial and operational data supporting tax filings and compliance activities.
  • Prepare workpapers and supporting schedules to ensure accurate tax reporting and audit readiness.
  • Support account reconciliations related to tax filings and identify variances for review by senior team members.
  • Assist with tax-related journal entries and month-end close activities under supervision.
  • Support responses to tax notices, license renewals, and registration requirements as assigned.
  • Collect and maintain supporting documentation for internal and external audits.
  • Collaborate with Senior Tax Accountants and operational teams to obtain required information.
  • Maintain accurate and reliable tax records in accordance with internal policies and procedures.
  • Escalate discrepancies, variances, or process questions to senior team members promptly.
  • Communicate status updates, issues, and risks to supervisors as needed.
  • Develop working knowledge of tax software and systems (Vertex, OPT, Tracker PRO, License Pro) through training and hands-on experience.

Key Skills and Abilities

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Access, Word, and PowerPoint; SAP experience preferred.
  • Strong organizational and prioritization skills to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines, especially during peak reporting periods.
  • Effective teamwork and communication skills to collaborate and share relevant information.
  • Analytical skills to review data, identify variances, and escalate issues under guidance.
  • Strong attention to detail and sound judgment in handling routine tax data and documentation.

Education Requirements

Minimum: 4 Year / Bachelor’s Degree — Accounting or Finance

Years of Experience

1 to 3 years of experience in Accounting or Finance

CCBSS operates a hybrid working environment. This is a teleworking role that requires working at a CCBSS office location on a regular basis (or a minimum number of days per month or week) at the manager’s discretion. The number of days required at a CCBSS office location is at the manager’s discretion and is subject to change depending on business needs.
